The High Court in Durban has sentenced Mxolisi Gcabashe to life imprisonment for the murder of the eThekwini ward councillor Minenhle Mkhize.

Mkhize was murdered outside his home in Cliffdale in 2022.

The eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has welcomed the sentence saying justice has been served.

Meanwhile, the case of the murder of another eThekwini ward councillor last year is still pending.

The eThekwini spokesperson Gugu Sisilana says, “Councillor Mkhize is one of two elected representatives in the municipality who have been brutally murdered since the elections in 2021. [In] welcoming the conviction, Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda says although the loss of councillor Mkhize’s life cannot be reversed, he extends his gratitude to the courts for ensuring that justice is served. Mayor Kaunda commend the police for ensuring a watertight case, resulting in the successful prosecution of the accused.”
