The family and friends of 32-year-old Katlego Bereng whose charred body was found in a cell in the Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein are still reeling in shock and grief.
The body of Bereng who was a father of two was used as a decoy when convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester escaped from the correctional facility in a staged suicide in May last year.
Authorities have confirmed through a positive DNA match with the deceased’s mother that the body that was thought to be Bester’s was instead that of Bereng.
Katlego’s grieving mother still grappling with the news that her son’s body was used in aiding Bester to escape from prison.
The family has been looking for Katlego since March 2022.
They searched local hospitals and government mortuary in Bloemfontein but had no luck.
They reported him missing in May last year.
Meanwhile, someone else had access to Katlego’s body and managed to gain entry with it into the Mangaung Correctional Centre to facilitate Bester’s fake suicide.
