Kaizer Chiefs proceed to Telkom Knockout semi-finals

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Kaizer Chiefs remain on track for a domestic cup title. This is after they narrowly beat Chippa United one-nil in Port Elizabeth to advance to the semi-finals of the Telkom Knockout. The draw for the last four took place after the match. Chiefs will play Bidvest Wits while Polokwane City will host Bloemfontein Celtic.

The match wrapped up the Telkom Knockout quarter final weekend. Fans anticipated a thrilling match and it lived up to expectation. It was end to end action as both teams attacked fiercely to break either defence. The last line of defence from both teams was unbreakable.

However Chiefs could have gone to the break leading comfortably. Two of their efforts at goal were ruled offside. It had to take a penalty kick to separate the two after a clumsy tackle from Chippa United captain James Okwuosa on Joseph Molangoana.

Although it was an exciting encounter, once again the officiating was questionable. It did not go down well with Chippa United Coach Tebogo Moloi. “Credit to my boys, thwy played really well. We all saw what happened, today there was three minutes when the keeper was injured for a long time the spectator went into the field but well done to Kaizer Chiefs,  let them go to the next round I guess that’s what everybody wants.”

The match ended in dramatic fashion as Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune had to be stretched off after a horrible contact with Kurt Lentjies. The Chippa United midfielder also did not complete the match. Chiefs Coach Steve Komphela had already used all his substitutions. Defender Daniel Cardoso had to stand in as goalkeeper. Khune’s injury will be a concern for Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter as the national team goes into camp in preparation for a crucial World Cup qualifier against Senegal on Friday.
