Chippa United vs Chiefs showdown in PSL opener on Sunday

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Chippa United coach Morgan Mammila says he expects a tough encounter when his side takes on Kaizer Chiefs in the opening encounter of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in Durban on Sunday. Mammila says playing the first game of the season against Amakhosi is a good motivator for his players, although Chiefs did not do well during pre-season friendlies.

But he says he is very wary of the danger posed by the Soweto giant.

The Chilli Boys started the season in high spirits after winning three consecutive games under Mammila. He is returning to Chippa for a second stint.

The team made its intentions clear of competing for silverware this season by bolstering its squad. The team has made a number of signings such Luvuyo Memela from Richards Bay, Craig Martin and Goodman Mosele from Orlando Pirates. Another signing is former Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu striker, Augustine Mulenga. The Zambian international says he’s been working hard to regain his form.

“This first game on Sunday is going to show us where we are, because we have been preparing for the past six or seven weeks. I’m sure it’s going to be a good game.”

The club will also be celebrating 10 years since relocating from the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape in 2014. Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Chippa, Lukhanyo Mzinzi, says that’s another motivation for the players to start the league on a high note.

The game between Kaizer Chiefs and Chippa United will start at 15:30 on Sunday.
