A City of Johannesburg health worker is expected to appear before the Booysens Magistrate’s Court on Monday for allegedly selling fake COVID-19 negative test certificates.

The suspect, from the Parkhurst Clinic, was arrested at the weekend following a week-long sting operation.

Joburg City Spokesperson, Lucky Sindane, says the fake certificates were being sold to travellers for R500.

“He tells you that you will receive an SMS from the lab indicating that you have tested negative for COVID-19. He will give you a certificate from the lab which states that you have tested negative for COVID-19 and then you pay him R500. If a person is positive, they haven’t even conducted a test because there are no samples. How many people are going to be infected? We really hope that the law will set an example with this gentleman.”

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is not working alone. More suspects are expected to be arrested as the investigation is ongoing.
