The City of Joburg is set to unveil two hundred JMPD pointsmen on Thursday. This comes as the Joburg Roads Agency announced that 10% of the City’s traffic lights have been out since last month.

The pointsmen have attended a seven-day course.

The City’s Public Safety MMC Mcini Tshwaku says the pointsmen will only direct traffic; they don’t have the power of a Metro police officer. “They are going to be working during peak hours and also in areas with high traffic concentration. The regional directors, the DDs, have submitted information regarding areas where there’s a lot of traffic and issues. Additionally, this unit will check areas affected by load shedding. Using the load shedding schedule, they’ll be able to direct traffic in those areas.”
