The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in the North West says it’s investigating allegations that a councillor in the Bojanala region voted twice. This after the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the province filed a complaint with the electoral commission.

The EFF’s Jerry Matebisi says they are very concerned about this kind of irregularity.

“We acknowledge the fact that the IEC has got the constitutional mandate to run elections in the Republic of South Africa. However, we have a concern with the number of irregularities that have taken place throughout the voting day. You’d remember that we received a lot of complaints especially from Bojanala region where complaints about people who voted twice.”

IEC North West head Tumeloentle Thiba says the matter will be given the necessary attention.

“If indeed this person did vote twice, that in my opinion constitutes electoral fraud. So we’ll escalate the matter to the national office in Centurion and then investigations will be taken from there.”

Thiba says it will help if political parties can substantiate their claims.

“It seems this is a universal phenomenon. Whether or not it happened, there still needs to be a proof and evidence of that. In our province in particular, one political party raised a matter of a councillor who voted twice in the Rustenburg area. We are waiting for the political party to give us the details or the name of the councillor. The stations were given already and we will then investigate.”
