Growing hooliganism at sport events a national security threat

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Legislation governing sporting events is lacking, and needs to be reviewed. This was agreed upon in Parliament on Tuesday, during a joint sitting of the Police and Sport and Recreation committees.

MPs were briefed by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and the SA Police Service (SAPS) on how and why violence erupted after a soccer match at the Moses Mabhida stadium in April.

The committees heard that cabinet has already approved a review of the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act.

Scenes from April match between Kaizer Chiefs and Free State Stars shocked the country, and could have far-reaching implications for South Africa.

Police say the initial assessment prior to the match categorised the event as medium risk.

While the deputy Sport minister, Bongani Mkongi said the growing hooliganism at sporting events is a national security threat, the PSL acknowledged that the current legislation is not adequate.

Cabinet has already approved a review of Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act (SASREA).

And a judicial inquiry into violence at sporting events has already been requested by the sport ministry.
