The theft and corruption trial of former Hawks Mpumalanga Commander, Richard Nkwanyane, will start on Wednesday in the Nelspruit Regional Court in Mbombela.

He is accused of stealing more than R439 000.

Nkwanyana handed himself over in October following a police investigation into the disappearance of the money seized from two suspects in Cape Town in May last year.

The Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court later cleared the suspects and ordered that the money be returned to them.

According to the Hawks, the money had allegedly vanished and Nkwanyane who took responsibility to safeguard it gave different statements.

An order was granted against the Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner in July this year to reimburse one of the two gentlemen.

Until today, he has fail to do so.

An investigation was initiated by the Hawks which revealed that a further R43 000 from a different case was also allegedly missing from R118 000 cash amount seized from the suspects.

Nkwanyane has since been dismissed from his position.
