Five people have been arrested following the attempted invasions of vacant land in Waterfall, Midrand and Marlboro, near Alexandra Township north of Johannesburg.

They broke down the fence to the private property and attempted to build shacks since Friday night.

“Saturday’s invasion attempt at Waterfall, there was 5 people arrested for malicious damage to property. Currently the detainees will appear in Midrand Magistrates Court on Monday. The situation is calm today, there is nothing happening in the Waterfall area. However, in the Marlboro area, they are busy registering applicants for the land invasion. Its plus minus 40 people at the KFC in Malboro,” says Police spokesperson Granville Meyer.

EFF ward councillor in Alexandra, Washington Maponyane says they support the land invasions which have been going on in Gauteng.

The situation comes after the ANC and the EFF joined forces and called for the expropriation of land without compensation. Maponyane says there’s enough land for the people of Alexandra.

“About 300 to 400 shacks were erected but you need an aerial view to see those shacks because that land is very huge and would be enough for all people of greater Alexandra.”
