At least 40 shacks have burnt down in two shack fires in Gauteng.
In Alexandra north of Johannesburg, 20 shacks were destroyed by fire and another 20 in Soweto.
No injuries have been reported.
Emergency medical services(EMS) in Johannesburg have cautioned residents of leaving hot appliances unattended.
The EMS’ Robert Mulaudzi says: ‘We just want to urge our residents to continue to look after their heating devices and not to leave them unattended. Things like parafin stoves, candles and heaters should not be left unattended especially in the extremely cold temperatures we are experiencing throughout the City of Johannesburg.”
