The official death toll of mentally ill patients could go up on Friday when Health Ombudsman, Malegapuru Makgoba, makes a second appearance to present his updated report at the Life Esidimeni Arbitration hearings in Parktown, Johannesburg.

Makgoba gave a figure of 94 in February when he released his report into the deaths of the patients following their transfer to unlicensed NGOs.

As the first witness to testify when the hearings got underway last month, he raised the figure to 118.

Later that week, Acting Gauteng Health HOD Enerst Kenoshi revealed that 141 patients had died.

Evidence leader Patrick Ngutshana has confirmed that Makgoba will be back on the witness stand on Friday.
