The National Assembly has adopted the report of the Powers and Privileges Committee imposing sanctions against EFF members who interrupted the budget speech of Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan in July 2019.

The committee recommended that two members of the party, Sam Matiase and Primrose Sonti be suspended for a period not exceeding a month without pay, as they are repeat offenders.

The committee also recommended that 14 other members be given a fine not exceeding a month’s salary. In support of the report, Democratic Alliance (DA) Chief Whip Natasha Mazzone made these remarks which were later ruled to be unparliamentary.

“What we saw was a minister trying to give a budget speech. And not being afraid to attempt to attack a minister,” says Mazzone.
