Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga says the government’s pro-poor policies are benefiting schools that previously performed badly.
She took part in the debate on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address (SONA).
Earlier, during the debate, DA MP, Baxolile Nodada painted a bleak picture of the education system, saying Ramaphosa is out of touch with the realities on the ground.
But, Motshekga says there is evidence that the schooling system is working, especially for the poor.
“We have to report (that) pro-poor policies are bearing fruit. The difference in the performance of no-fee and fee-paying schools is narrowing, (with) no-fee schools consistently producing a high proportion of bachelor passes since 2015,” she says.
