Eastern Cape snowfall subsides, one road remains closed

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The snow that fell over the high ground of the Eastern Cape has abated and only one road remains closed.

The Eastern Cape acting director of provincial traffic, Charles Bramwell, says it is only the Barkley pass on the R58 that remains closed due to icy and dangerous driving conditions.

The snow forced the closure of four passes on Monday across the province and caused a number of crashes.

The Provincial Traffic spokesperson Unathi Binqose says the situation on the roads is much improved from Monday.

“Today [Tuesday], apart from the Barkley Pass on the R58 between Barkley East and Elliot, all the other mountain passes are open to traffic. However, we are calling on road users, motorists in particular to approach those mountain passes with caution and to keep in mind that weather conditions can change at any moment,” adds Binqose.
