A 57-year-old man who is accused of torching his wife and four children to death at Kidstone Place in Phoenix north of Durban, is expected to appear in the Durban High Court on Tuesday.

It is alleged that in 2021, Kista Chetty set alight his wife Elisha Naidoo, his 13-year-old daughter and three sons.

According to the indictment, Chetty’s wife and children lived in a back room of her brother’s house.

The woman’s brother and his family survived the attack with severe burn wounds.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says, “The accused in this matter faces five counts of murder…and arson . The charges relate to an incident that took place in November 2021 in the Phoenix area. The State in its indictment is alleging that following an argument and being asked to leave the house Chetty regained access to the house and started a fire. This resulted in the murders and attempted murders.”

Earlier this month, Eastern Cape police investigated an apparent family murder-suicide that occurred in Butterworth.

A mother of three first killed her daughters before taking her own life. A neighbour found 38-year-old Bongeka Buso hanging in her rondavel.
