Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Health Department confirmed a diphtheria outbreak at the Pollsmoor Correctional Centre in Tokai, Cape Town. This follows the death of a 19-year-old inmate on November 5, 2023.

Diphtheria is a contagious bacterial infection that affects the nose and throat. It can cause difficulty breathing, swallowing, and talking. In severe cases, diphtheria can be fatal.

Department of Health spokesperson Foster Mohale has called on the public not to panic, saying the outbreak is under control at the facility.

“Public health measures were undertaken to put the outbreak under control,” Mohale said. “These measures include contact tracing of inmates, correctional services staff, healthcare workers, and emergency services personnel.”

Mohale added that 55 close contacts of the deceased inmate were tested for diphtheria, and eight of them tested positive. Two of the eight inmates are experiencing mild symptoms, while the other six are asymptomatic. All of the infected inmates are between the ages of 18 and 23.

The Health Department is urging all inmates and staff at the Pollsmoor Correctional Centre to get vaccinated against diphtheria. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself from the disease.

Diphtheria is a preventable disease, but it is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms so that you can seek medical attention early if you are infected.
