Defence expected to scrutinise Raphadu’s testimony in Meyiwa trial

North Gauteng High Court
Reading Time: 2 minutes

The defence team in the Senzo Meyiwa case is this morning expected to continue to scrutinise Moholo Raphadu‘s testimony during the trial within a trial in the High Court in Pretoria.

Raphadu is the police officer who recorded the confession statement of one of the accused, Bongani Ntanzi.

Five men are currently being tried for the murder of the renowned soccer star.

Meyiwa was gunned down in October 2014 in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg.

Yesterday, defence lawyer Thulani Mngomezulu reiterated his claim that Ntanzi was tortured, and he signed the alleged confession under duress.

“He never made such as statement. The statement came with Brigadier (Bongani) Gininda and he was ordered to sign the statement. This means that he did not make a statement and he was not freely and voluntarily pending the signature on the statement…he did all this freely and voluntarily my lord.”

Continued calls for justice

Yesterday marked nine years since Meyiwa was shot and killed on 26 October 2014.

The murder took place at his former girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus when two intruders allegedly entered the house where Meyiwa and other people were sitting and demanded cellphones and money.

During a scuffle that ensued, a shot went off and Meyiwa was shot in the chest and succumbed to his injuries.

Marking nine years since his death, a community organisation gathered outside the High Court, demanding justice.
