Deadly weekend on North West roads as crashes claim 12 lives

North West police are investigating the cause of major road crashes on the province’s roads after twelve people, including a three-year-old child, lost their lives in three separate accidents this weekend.

According to the spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Tshegofatso Mothibedi, seven people died when two vehicles collided on the Lichtenburg-Biesiesvlei road late on Saturday afternoon.

In a separate incident also on Saturday, two vehicles collided head-on on the N4 between Zeerust and Dinokana.

The driver and three passengers from the taxi died, while three other passengers were taken to the hospital.

In a third incident, a 72-year-old woman died when she was hit by a vehicle on the N4 near Dinokana.

Mothibedi has urged motorists to exercise caution on the road.

“MEC Sello Lehari also takes this time to encourage all motorists to be patient on the road and to exercise a bit of vigilance. Also obey the rules of the road at all times, and also encourage motorists to work together with all the police officials and traffic officials that have been dispatched on our roads to ensure safety.”
