De Lille walks out of motion of no confidence sitting

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille has walked out of a special sitting of the council where a motion of no confidence against her is being heard.

The motion is going ahead in her absence. This after the City of Cape Town’s Speaker, Dirk Smit ruled that a secret ballot during the vote of no confidence is not necessary.

Smit addressed the council saying he’s taken note of the fact that not all councillors in the DA caucus agree on the motion.

Smit says in his view no councillor should fear to vote because the DA has assured the court that councillors have the right to vote freely using their conscience.

On Wednesday the Cape High Court ordered the speaker to use his discretion on whether the vote should be a secret ballot.

De Lille is challenging the speakers decision. De Lille says she will head back to the Court.
