The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and its affiliates including the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru), South African Municipal Worker’s Union (Samwu), the South African Students Congress (Sasco) have called on government to ensure that the residents of the North West are provided with clean drinking water to avoid cholera cases in the province.

This emerged in Mahikeng during Cosatu’s nationwide day of action on Thursday.

The action related to what the labour federation calls challenges that workers in the country are facing.

Cosatu’s Provincial Secretary, Kopano Konopi says, “Urgent solution to the water and energy crisis that our country is facing. Everyday we have two hours of load shedding, and we are told that it is better than six hours, but we believe that any minute of load shedding is too much. We demand a response within 14 days of of receiving this memorandum.”
