Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga will officially launch the 2023/24 Festive Season Road Safety Campaign this weekend at the Tsakane Stadium east of Johannesburg.

The campaign’s main focus this year is on how alcohol affects driving behavior and how it contributes to road carnage.

Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesperson Simon Zwane says they are also remembering all the victims and survivors of road crashes.

Zwane says, “Our analysis tells us that we have to focus on the five provinces that contribute 80% of the fatalities on the South African roads. Those are Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Limpopo.”

“So we will focus on those but also we now understand that in the provinces and municipalities, they don’t work after hours so there’s no 24-hour shift and fatalities do happen. The majority of them happen at night, so we will also be augmenting their manpower there to assist them to close that gap after hours, so starting 15 hours to midnight we will be intensifying.”
