Police Minister Bheki Cele together with transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga and Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane have visited the Port St Johns area following the death of six people in taxi-related violence.
The two taxi associations involved held a meeting with the three leaders. The associations also resolved their differences and signed a peace accord.
The organiser of Port St Johns business forum Mbongeni Kotana says they want Cele to explain why police officers are struggling to address their problems.
” We saw people being released without going to court, we want Bheki Cele to tell us what happened to his police officers and prosecutors. We want Port St Johns police to be investigated by Hawks. During the taxi violence that happened in 2018, businesses did not operate. In 2018 cars were identified and their stickers were taken but we did not hear who was arrested and what happened to those cases.β
#PoliceMinistry Residents have so far called for police to make arrests of those suspects who use the barrel of the gun to settle disputes. The meeting to find a way forward is currently underway at the Exolwemi Hall in Port St Johns. #TaxiViolence NP pic.twitter.com/NjY6H28xa8
