Cele calls for public restraint in Groblersdal assault case

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Police Minister Bheki Cele has urged members of the public in Groblersdal, Limpopo, to allow the law to take its course without hindrance. Cele was speaking outside the town’s magistrate’s court where two farmers were appearing for the alleged assault on a farm security guard.

Last week, a group of protesting white farmers clashed with the police. One of the farmers has been arrested for the alleged assault on a police officer.

Last year, a white resident was arrested for attacking a black person in another racially motivated crime.

Cele has expressed concern that the Groblersdal area seems to be having problems of racially motivated crimes.

“We just need to respect laws and let them go all the way but we want to take note that such things in these towns are happening. This is not the first one; such cases are happening here. There was another where a person was murdered, so we must work with this town very closely.”
