One of former President Jacob Zuma’s staunchest supporters, Carl Niehaus, will be appearing in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands on Wednesday.
Niehaus was arrested outside the Estcourt prison last month for breaking Level 4 lockdown regulations.
He is alleged to have been among a group of African National Congress (ANC) members and supporters who had gathered outside the Estcourt prison where Zuma was incarcerated.
Niehaus was arrested while conducting a live broadcast interview with the media. He was later released on R2 000 bail and ordered to appear in court.
He is also suspended from the ANC for the alleged utterances he made in Nkandla a few days before Zuma was arrested.
Carl Niehaus was arrested outside Estcourt prison during a SABC interview:
This was my wrongful arrest on the 8th of July infront of the Estcourt Prison where @PresJGZuma is a political prisoner. COVID-19 protocols were abused to try and silence me. Tomorrow (18 Aug,), I will challenge these illegal charges head-on in the Estcourt magistrate court. pic.twitter.com/VWNAX1hfeL

You are a bloody joke. I will show you that I am not a coward by taking the NPA head on tomorrow in court in Estcourt for wrongful arrest, and that the Covid-19 protocols are being abused to undermine the Constitution and to repress freedom of speech. I will be in court fighting!
