The Presidency has downplayed reports that President Jacob Zuma has convened an urgent cabinet meeting in Cape Town.

Presidential spokesperson Bongani Ngqulunga says the meeting is an ordinary session of cabinet committees.

The meeting comes at a point where uncertainty about president Zuma’s future rages on. This is after he met with the top six of the African National Congress (ANC) on Sunday, apparently to request him to step down.

Nqulunga says Tuesday’s meeting is an ordinary session, with cabinet committees to discuss various issues relating to government programs. He says the next meeting of cabinet is scheduled for next week Wednesday.

While President Zuma is continuing with business as usual ahead of the state of the nation address of Thursday, it’s all eyes on the special National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Wednesday.

The NEC is expected to take a decision on whether he should continue to serve as the Head of state and whether State of the Nation Address should continue to take place as planned.
