Buffalo City implements plan to address water infrastructure issue

The Buffalo City metro in the Eastern Cape says plans are in place to fix water infrastructure that has contributed to the water outage crisis in Liefeldt, just outside Qonce in the province. Liefeldt residents lambasted the Buffalo City Metro for failing to provide them with clean water.

The water supply to this rural community has been problematic for almost a year, and the residents have resorted to using water from a nearby dam for cleaning and bathing and buying bottled water for drinking.

Municipal spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya says power cuts and infrastructure vandalism are the main problems in this area.

“There are issues like vandalism as well as power cuts with which we are experiencing problems for us, particularly the most affected people being rural areas. We are trying to put in water tankers where possible. But we are making sure that people have some of the services because the problem in Buffalo City is not lack of water but access to our piping system from the taps up until the pumping stations.”
