The memorial service of the former Free State Premier Beatrice Marshoff will take place this afternoon at the Norman Doubell community centre in Heidedal, Bloemfontein.

She has been accorded a provincial official funeral category one, which will take place at the same venue on Sunday.

Marshoff died at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg last Friday, after being admitted following health complications.

Her granddaughter Alexis Marshoff says it has been difficult for the family to deal with her death.

“My grandma was really selfless, she was one of those people who put everybody else before her. She always wanted to make sure that everyone is okay and she cared so much about the country and about the ANC especially. She really just wanted it to be a platform where we can help and serve the people,” adds her granddaughter

Marshoff was an ANC MP from 1994 to 1999 and served as a Member of the Executive Council for Social Development between 2001 to 2004.

She then succeeded Winkie Direko as Premier in 2004.
