AmaZulu King calls for independence of Ingonyama Trust Board

Reading Time: < 1 minute

AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has called for the independence of the Ingonyama Trust Board from the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development.

The King is the sole trustee of the trust.

The call was made by Thulasizwe Buthelezi, the newly appointed Traditional Prime Minister to the AmaZulu nation.

Buthelezi says this creates the impression that traditional leaders are incapable of controlling their land.

He says, “His Majesty has embarked on wide consultation on whether it is still necessary and ideal for the Ingonyama Trust to be under the auspices of the minister of agriculture.”

“Are Amakhosi that illiterate or incapable of running their own land and affairs that they must still report and be supervised by the minister in Cape Town about their own land, which they inherited from their forefathers? Why must the land of the Zulu people be administered in Cape Town when Amakhosi have their own governance structures which are closer to the people.”
