The Department of Water and Sanitation in Limpopo says the province will lean more on groundwater sources to augment bulk supply, as surface water sources continue to dry up.
South Africa observes national Water Week, with the focus being on groundwater sources.
Over a hundred thousand households in Limpopo have drilled boreholes. Provincial Head of Department Lucy Kobe says they want to grow this number.
“We have been highly impacted with climate change resulting in high evaporation rates that leads to lowering of our dam levels and then groundwater has become the sustainable resource to lean on and as government and communities we need to manage, protect and save this hidden resource.”
Meanwhile, some residents of Sephukubje village outside Giyani, who have also sourced their own boreholes have appealed to government to regulate the sector.
“I paid R22 000 for the first one and R30 000 for the second one. I used my pension money to have boreholes drilled in my yard twice,” a resident explains.
