Abalone, crayfish tails worth R1.5 million confiscated in Western Cape

Western Cape traffic officials have confiscated abalone worth an estimated R400 000 on the N2 near Grabouw in the Overberg.

Provincial traffic spokesperson Jandre Bakker says a man, who was stopped during a routine stop and search process, tried to bribe an officer before fleeing the scene.

During the stop-and-search process, the driver of the vehicle did not respond to multiple requests to open the boot of the vehicle. The driver in his early 40s then tried to bribe the officer before fleeing the scene.

1515 units of abalone were found in his vehicle with an estimated street value of R400 000. A search is unde rway for the suspect.

The vehicle and abalone have been handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Meanwhile, two people have been arrested after being found in possession of crayfish tails worth an estimated R1.1 million in Vredenburg.

Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg says the suspects, aged 19 and 36, are expected to appear in court on Monday.

Twigg says, “The members received information about a white Ford Ranger with two occupants transporting the crayfish tails. The vehicle was spotted and pulled over. Upon searching the vehicle the members found bags filled with crayfish tails in the back of the vehicle. A total of 17 534 tails were counted with an estimated street value of R 1,1 million.”
