Mathabatha says ANC must reduce the number of NEC members

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Limpopo African National Congress (ANC) chairperson Stan Mathabatha says the party must reduce the size of its National Executive Committee (NEC) members if it is serious about its renewal. Mathabatha says the number of NEC members should be reduced from 86 to about 40. He was addressing the ANC Sekhukhune regional conference under way in Groblersdal.

“As the delegates, you need to accept the responsibility to channel the organisation to a new direction, ask yourself very difficult questions. I always ask myself one question when I go to the NEC, do we really need this big NEC in the ANC if we are serious about renewal. Can’t we have an NEC with less than 40 people, you know you have got an NEC of about 86 people you raise your hand today you will talk after two days,” says Mathabatha.

NMB region conference

The sixth ANC regional conference of the Nelson Mandela Bay Region is also under way at Zwide Township in Gqeberha. Alliance partners, the South African Communist Party (SACP), Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and South African National Civic Organization (SANCO) have delivered messages of support, pleading for unity within the governing party.

The SACP says corruption is destroying the image of the ANC and that newly-elected leaders have an obligation to renew and restore the party.

“That was our resolution, the Congress resolution that we must support the ANC. That’s why as the party we’ve got an interest in terms of the outcome of the leadership for this region of Nelson Mandela. Remember, many years there was no leadership in this Metro, and that alone cost us as the alliance partners here in Nelson Mandela and therefore this time around we would love that leadership that will be elected here must focus on issues of Nelson Mandela. People of this Metro has been suffering for many, many years,” SACP District Chairperson in the Nelson Mandela Bay region Andile Mfunda explains.
