Free State MEC for Police, Roads and Transport has been fired

Former Free State African National Congress (ANC) Chairperson, Sam Mashinini, has been fired as MEC for Police, Roads and Transport. This follows a cabinet reshuffle by Free State Premier Sisi Ntombela.

Reports of the cabinet reshuffle have been doing the rounds following a leaked WhatsApp conversation by Ntombela, which painted a picture of strained relations with Mashinini.

Mashinini has been on sick leave for the last three months. His department’s HOD, Sipho Matakati, was suspended in May for allegedly failing to ensure that road infrastructure projects were properly managed.

Free State Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Roy Jankielsohn, is not entirely impressed.

“The ANC in the Free State is running around like headless chickens at this stage. We have an interim leader of the ANC in the province under Mr. Dukwana. The former chairperson in the Free State and also the MEC for Police, Roads, and Transport has been missing in action for several months and this has a devastating impact on service delivery within the provincial government.”
