The Democratic Alliance ‘s Joburg mayoral candidate in the upcoming local government elections, Dr. Mpho Phalatse, says service delivery is currently at a snail’s pace in the city and she will fix that if elected.

Other DA candidates include current Mayor Nqaba Bhanga for Nelson Mandela Bay, Geordin Hill-Lewis for the City of Cape Town, Randall Williams for Tshwane and Refiloe Nt’sekhe for Ekurhuleni.

Phalatse says Johannesburg residents deserve better.

“Johannesburg has been through a lot in the past five years. We had three administrators, three executive mayors. We had break down of service delivery, breakdown of infrastructure. I believe residents of Johannesburg have been craving now normality, stability, certainty you know, waking up hoping my lights will be working. They had been craving such basics, DA governs well,” says Phalatse.

Political analyst from the University of the Western Cape, Professor Bheki Mngomezulu, has described the DA’s choice of mayoral candidate for the City of Cape Town as an infusion of youth into its leadership ranks.

The 35-year-old Geordin Hill-Lewis has been announced as the DA’s mayoral candidate of the city of Cape Town.

Mngomezulu says Hill-Lewis has a combination of youth and skill.

“They are trying to do a couple of things. One, to indicate that they are trying to bring the youth on board, at the same time looking at experience within the DA, and then they are looking at experience within parliament, both national and provincial. So it means they they want someone with the requisite skills to run for this position.” –Additional reporting by Thandi Mawu.
