Heavy rainfall and flooding have wreaked havoc in many villages in the Greater Letaba Municipality in Limpopo, claiming the life of a toddler and leaving several individuals injured and families displaced.
The storm blew off the roofs of schools and churches in villages stretching from Sedibeng to Maphalle. Mopani District spokesperson, Odas Ngobeni, has sent heartfelt condolences to the family.
“The executive mayor, councillor Pule Shai has sent his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and further wished a speedy recovery to those who were injured. He has also sent a message of caution as the rains continue. Motorists are advised to continue to drive with caution as our roads are wet and slippery. Our team of disaster management officials is busy with assessments in the affected areas.”
The South African Weather Service has warned of the possibility of localised flooding from showers and thundershowers in Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
Temperatures are also expected to take a dip.
Forecaster, Venetia Phakula says the weather service has issued a level 2 yellow warning.
“We have also issued an impact-based warning. So we have gone with a yellow warning level 2 for severe thunderstorms with a high likelihood of minor impact. We expecting localised flooding, road flooding also localised flooding in low lying areas. There’s also a possibility of hail.”
