Black Consciousness stalwart Solombela to be laid to rest

The founding member of the Black Consciousness Movement, Dr Siyolo Solombela will be laid to rest in Zazulwana Village near Butterworth in the Eastern Cape.

Sixty-seven year-old Solombela died last week after a long illness.

Solombela has been hailed as a passionate doctor and a community builder.

He left an indelible mark in the liberation struggle as a disciplined underground Umkhonto Wesizwe Operative during the apartheid era.

 

Dozens of mourners including high ranking politicians, academics and villagers are expected to converge in Zazulwana Village near Butterworth to bid farewell to a distinguished medical doctor.

Solombela was role model who encouraged many black students to choose the medical careers and also facilitated scholarships for them.

He also played an important role in the fight against the racist apartheid regime as an underground Umkhonto Wesizwe Operative.

He assisted with recruitment and transportation of MK operatives in Mthatha in 70’s and 80s.

Solombela also worked as a specialist physician in private and public health facilities including Frere hospital.

He created a special non-fee medical outpatient service for patients who cannot afford private hospital fees.

The founding member of the Black Consciousness Movement held various positions in a number of health institutions that include Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town.
