Teaching and learning has been disrupted by the protest action at the two schools in Mataffin near Mbombela.
The residents say their protest has been triggered by the fact that they are being overlooked for employment in projects that are in the area.
Meanwhile, the protesters have blockaded the road leading in and out of Mataffin and a truck has allegedly been torched.
This has caused the N4 bypass towards Mbombela to be closed.
The protesters have used stones and burning objects to blockade the road.
Businesses in the area has also been affected.
Police are monitoring the area.
