High murder stats persist in Gauteng

Gauteng Police Commissioner Deliwe de Lange has highlighted murder as one of the biggest crime challenges facing police in the province.

She was addressing the Portfolio Committee on Community Safety in the Gauteng Legislature in Johannesburg.

De Lange had been called to account on the crime situation in the wake of the Crime Statistics released last month.

De Lange says there were 435 reported murder cases in Gauteng during the 2016/2017 financial year.

Of those 186 were related to domestic violence while mob justice accounted for 105 cases.

Taxi related violence was responsible for the loss of 82 lives with 25 cases linked to turf wars among illegal miners.

She says another contributory factor to the increased murder rates was murders that occurred on or in close proximity to farms.

She says the province has also struggled to combat sexual assault and rape, as well as vehicle hijackings, robberies in transit and house and business robberies.
