Political analyst Ongama Mtimka says Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan is a politician who made a positive contribution to the architecture of finance and revenue collection in South Africa.

Gordhan is the latest apartheid struggle veteran, set to retire in the coming weeks, to focus on his health and family.

This year’s general elections on May 29 marks the end of Gordhan’s era.

It has also been confirmed that African National Congress NEC member and Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will not return to Parliament.

Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan set to retire:

Mtimka says what might have cast doubt on Gordhan’s leadership and credibility was the failure of the country’s State-owned enterprises.

“Both these senior politicians of the ANC were one way or another involved either by commission or mission in the major wars that took place for President Cyril Ramaphosa to characterise the ANC as the party at war with itself.”

He adds: “What’s interesting for me is to observe the social media. I saw some people for example saying good riddance to Gordhan but when you’re talking about a politician who has a great legacy in the public service never mind that the SOE’s leadership has left a lot to be desired but you’re talking about somebody who made a good contribution in South Africa.”
