MPs swearing in ceremony under way

Swearing in ceremony underway.
Reading Time: 2 minutes

The swearing in ceremony of 400 Members of Parliament is currently under way in Cape Town.

Meanwhile, the ANC says the postponement of the swearing-in of the party’s Deputy President David Mabuza as an MP is not linked to whether or not he will be part of the next Cabinet.

Mabuza has requested that his swearing in be postponed until allegations against him have been dealt with, within the party’s Integrity Commission.

Head of presidency in the ANC, Zizi Kodwa says the party commends Mabuza’s decision but has reiterated that this has nothing to do with factions within the ruling party.

Mabuza has been named in a number of scandals including allegations of being behind political killings in Mpumalanga.

Kodwa says that according to the Constitution the President may select two members of cabinet who are not part of the National Assembly.

“It’s not the first time a member designate has requested for a swearing in to be postponed. In the fourth administration we have had a number of such requests and both the party and parliament agreed to their swearing in later. We don’t think that must be linked to the position of the Deputy President and the Deputy President of the ANC, those are two different things. The fact that he’s the deputy president of the ANC is not a guarantee that he will be in the position of the deputy president of the republic,” he says.

According to the Constitution the President may select two members of cabinet who are not part of the national assembly.

ANC National Working Committee member and Environmental Affairs Minister Nomvula Mokonyane will also not be sworn into the National Assembly on Wednesday.
