Reading Time: < 1 minute

Young and old journalists have all gathered Thursday afternoon to pay their last respect to the late photo journalist Sam Nzima.

Nzima is known for his iconic picture of Hector Petersen taken during the Soweto uprising in 1976. The renowned photographer, who has been often referred to as bra Sam, died on Saturday in Mpumalanga.

Veteran photographer Peter Magubane, who was flanked by Mathata Tsedu, is also present to pay his last respect to the fallen hero. Speaker after speaker has described Nzima as one of the bravest journalist the country has produced.

Artist Lebani Sirenge has drawn a portrait of Nzima. Joe Latakgomo says the Hector Petersen picture has captured the phrase that says a picture is worth a thousand words.

Latakgomo says they will miss Nzima’s jokes and laughter. Nzima will be laid to rest on Saturday in a special provincial funeral.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered the national flags be flown at half-mast in Mpumalanga during the ceremony.
