Hawks continue search for fugitive Gupta brother

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Hawks have appealed to Ajay Gupta to turn himself in after declaring him a fugitive from justice.

The crime busting unit says Gupta has failed to present himself to it despite an agreement it reached with his lawyer. He is one of the three Gupta brothers accused of corrupt links with former president Jacob Zuma.

On Thursday morning it was reported that Gupta tried to evade arrest by skipping the country.

However, his attempt to flee was foiled when the pilot refused to fly the private jet at Lanseria Airport.

Hawks spokesperson, Hangwani Mulaudzi, explains, “We had a discussion with his lawyers were we made it clear to them that we are looking for his client. We haven’t received any communication with them. We believe that he’s on the run and a warrant of arrest has been issued against his name. We know for a fact that he’s in the country and we have made contact with his lawyers so that they should hand him in. He does not comply, then we will use other means to make sure that we apprehend him.”
