George DA supporters celebrate party’s victory

Reading Time: 2 minutes

With the Democratic Alliance (DA) currently leading the ballot count in the Western Cape, supporters in George believe it’s a done deal.

85.94% Voting Districts (VDs) have now been declared and the DA is leading the pack with 55.17% of the votes.

The African National Congress (ANC) is second at 28.79%, followed by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) – which garnered 3.8% of the votes.

Both the DA and the ANC have lost some ground, as at this stage in 2014 they had secured 59.38% and 32.89% of the votes respectively.

New kid on the block – Patricia De Lille’s Good party is fourth, having won 3.12% of the votes.

Celebrations have begun

DA supporters in the community of Borcherds have been celebrating since Wednesday night.

Not minding lack of sleep, they were back on the streets early on Thursday.

Young people in the area hope the party will provide the jobs as  promised.

ANC supporters say they want what’s best for South Africans. One of them, Sam Mntuyedwa, is asking for peace and tolerance.

“We must work together with the white people to learn from them. We can’t chase the white people. They must teach us how to farm. If we chase them, we’ll all stay hungry in South Africa,” Mntuyedwa says.

Meanwhile, Hermanus residents have welcomed the preliminary results.

The community has been at loggerheads with the DA-led Cape Town municipality over land.
