The City of Johannesburg has offered a substantial reward in connection with what it says was sabotage at the Eikenhof substation on Monday, leading to a power outage and extensive water cuts.

Mayor Herman Mashaba says he is convinced from video footage that the fire started outside the substation where someone had poured oil in order to make it catch fire.

Mashaba is fuming about what he calls an act of sabotage which caused water shortages and plunged areas as far as the North West into darkness.

The mayor posted on Twitter that he is working together with law enforcement agencies to bring the culprits to book.

He also called on communities to report any information they might have and said there was a reward of a R100 000 for information that leads to a successful arrest.
