Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) says unknown gun men have shot and wounded an armed contractor who was escorting train drivers on duty in Cape Town.

Acting Group CEO, Cromet Molepo, says the attack took place Sunday morning in Phillippi, Samora Machel.

The driver of the vehicle was shot in the shoulder.

Molepo says this incident is the latest in a series of criminal attacks against PRASA staff while engaged in their daily operations.

Molepo says money that could be used towards servicing passengers, will now be deviated to hire more security personnel. Prasa has already hired 88 additional armed security guards, and two armoured vehicles in the Western Cape.

They are deployed on 24 hour patrols to enable technical teams repair vital equipment and prevent further attacks on rail infrastructure.
