Political analyst Dumisani Hlophe says if President Jacob Zuma‘s fate is not urgently resolved, it will become a crisis.

As uncertainty on the fate of Zuma continues, the ANC has convened an emergency National Executive Committee meeting for Monday to discuss the issue.

This follows talks led by ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa aimed at clinching a deal to pave the way for the voluntary resignation of President Zuma.

Sources close to the talks say the Monday meeting of the ANC’s top decision-making body will endorse the proposal that the President be recalled from high office.

Hlophe says the negotiations need a timely finality.

“At this point in time, it’s no longer about Jacob Zuma per se, it’s about the ANC, and its ability to lead itself… but also its ability to govern itself. The primary question that we are quickly encroaching into is – if the ANC is unable to lead itself, what are the chances that it can lead society appropriately?  So sooner or later it will be a crisis – unless, this weekend it’s resolved.”
