World Cup fever was running high in Mexico on Sunday with Mexicans turning out to catch a glimpse of the World Cup 2022 trophy, which will be awarded to the winning team in Qatar.

With 35 days to kick off, the trophy is currently on its world tour. Saturday’s destination was a 48-hour stopover in Argentina.

Excited fans got their photos taken with the trophy as they eagerly awaited the start of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Carlos Segura, a 37-year-old computer engineer, sold his vehicle and has been saving for four years to travel to the World Cup.

“I have planned the trip to attend 14 matches. Between accommodation and airfare, I have spent about 100 000 Mexican pesos ($4 988). Hiring a travel agency would cost me about 500 000 Mexican pesos ($24 940) or more than 300 000 Mexican pesos ($14 964).”

The trophy will be displayed in the Iztapalapa municipality, east of Mexico City, from October 16-17.

It will then travel to Guadalajara and Monterrey.
