The winners of the prestigious annual National Youth Music Competition have been announced in Cape Town.
A music student at the University of Cape Town, 19-year-old pianist Gerhard Joubert has won the gold medal and R30 000.
A 19-year-old viola player from the Musikgymnasium Schloss in Belvedere Germany, Eike Coetzee, walked off with silver and R12 500.
The bronze medal and R8 000 cash went to 15-year-old flutist Daniel Spies from Roodepoort in Gauteng.
The prizes were awarded during a gala concert at the Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium in Parow during which the six finalists competed against each other, backed by the esteemed Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.
