An ANC Youth League Regional Executive Member is expected to bring an urgent application in the High Court in Cape Town on Monday against the Western Cape government’s water policy.
Advocate Winston Erasmus argues that Premier Helen Zille has failed to appoint a Commissioner of the Environment as required in terms of the Provincial Constitution.
He says there is unsustainable extraction of groundwater and desalination of contaminated sea water. Erasmus wants the court to force the provincial authority to appoint an environment commissioner.
He says the Cape Flats aquifers are also being polluted with waste water.
