Reading Time: 2 minutes

The City of Johannesburg says water and electricity will be restored by Monday to buildings that were affected when a gas chemical blast caused an explosion on the Lilian Ngoyi Street, formerly known as Bree, in the Johannesburg CBD on Wednesday.

A person was killed, and 48 others injured when the blast ripped through a stretch of the street, sending pedestrians and vehicles, including taxis up in the air.

Some residents in the area hope the water and electricity will be restored soon.

“We are suffocating because the toilets that we are using need to be flushed. We use water for all those needs like to cook, but we hope things will be fine. And also us as the residents who are staying, we are affected to get the food to eat.”

“This disaster is affecting us a lot. We don’t have electricity; we don’t have water since the gas explosion. We have not been told what is happening.”
